Electoral amendment: 42 senators reportedly backing President Buhari

- Some senators are moving to override President Buhari's decision in the election reordering bill

- About 42 senators are however in support of the president

- The bill has scaled the first reading

Names of some senators reportedly backing President Muhammadu Buhari after he refused to sign the Electoral Act Amendment bill have been revealed. The bill is seeking to reorder the sequence of the forthcoming 2019 elections.

The president refused to sign the bill prompting an attempt by the Senate to override his decision. The process has begun in the Senate and scaled through first reading on Tuesday, March 27.

Daily Trust reports that a source in the Senate said 42 senators were in agreement with the decision of President Buhari.

It was reported that a faction led by a former governor of Nasarawa state, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, is in support of the president's action while the second camp has the backing of the Senate leadership.

Some of the senators backing President Buhari include: Ali Ndume, Ahmad Lawan, Jibrin Barau, Ovie Oma- Agege, Abdullahi Adamu, Abu Ibrahim and Tayo Alasoadura.

According to a list reportedly provided by a source in the Senate, the group has: Abia 0 Adamawa 3, Anambra 1, Akwa Ibom 1, Bauchi 0, Benue 1, Bayelsa 0, Borno 1, Cross River 1, Delta 0, Ebonyi 1, Edo 1, Enugu 0, Ekiti 0, FCT 0 and Gombe 0.

Others are Imo 2, Jigawa 2, Kaduna 1, Kano 2, Katsina 3, Kebbi 1, Kogi 0, Kwara 0, Lagos 3, Nasarawa 1 Niger 1, Ondo 3, Osun 2, Oyo 2, Ogun 2, Plateau 2, Rivers 2, Sokoto 0, Taraba 1, Yobe 2 and Zamfara 0.

Meanwhile, Attorney General of the Federation and minister of justice, Abubakar Malami, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have given reasons why the court should not allow the NASS to tamper with the already released sequence for the forthcoming general elections.

Vanguard reports that the NASS, through its lead counsel, Joseph Daudu queried the jurisdiction of the court to stop it from securing two-third majority to override President Muhammadu Buhari’s refusal to assent to the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, 2018, which altered the election sequence.
